Queen’s Birthday Tournament 2021

Ladies and gentlemen, the time has come. The highly anticipated, annual Queen’s Birthday Tournament is just around the corner.

With the annual tournament having to be skipped in 2020, it is back this year, with less than a week to go and boy is it gonna be good!

This year, our cousins over in the Bombay Hills, from Pukekohe Indian Sports Club are hosting. The tournament is taking place at Rosa Birch Park from the 5th to the 7th of June.

Over the three days, we will see Indian Sports Clubs from across the nation go head to head for the top spot.

In this years competition, on the Men’s side we have: Auckland, Bay of Plenty, Central Districts, Christchurch, North Harbour, Pukekohe, Waikato and Wellington.

On the Women’s side we have:

Auckland, Bay of Plenty, North Harbour, Pukekohe and Wellington.

In addition to a weekend full of great hockey, delicious food and hot chai, we can’t forget about the QBT Social - it wouldn’t be QBT without it!

The social is taking place on Sunday 6th June, from 5:30pm to 11:30pm at the Pukekohe Indian Hall.

Adults tickets are $40 and children under 12 are $25. There will be no door sales.

And as we gear up for a weekend of hockey, it’s a fitting time to look back into the history books. Below is a photo of the first Auckland Indian Sports Club team to win the coveted Dhyan Chand Trophy in 1965.

The opposition in the final was the Wellington Indian Sports Club. Mohan Ganda scored the winning goal, leaving Auckland with a 1-0 win.

The tournament begun  in 1963, with Wellington winning the championship for the first and second ever tournament.

There’s no doubt that our players repping the 09 are excited and honoured to take the turf this coming long weekend and follow in the path of our ’65 winning legends.

Goodluck to all competing this weekend - go well!
